Discover this new trail from Ambleside via Rydal Water to Grasmere with trained leaders. Just right for active families and leisure cyclists who wish to explore by bike. We follow a little known quiet route out of Ambleside and head for the shores of Rydal and Grasmere. Our effort is rewarded in Grasmere with lots of cafes for refreshment – or perhaps a piece of Grasmere gingerbread. For the return, we retrace the route – the views look very different this way.
Starts from: Outside Ambleside Primary School, Vicarage Road, Ambleside LA22 9DH departing at 11.00am
Price: Adult £5, children free. Advanced booking essential.
Length: 20 km, 12 miles
Duration: 3 hours
Route characteristics: minor roads & improved bridleways. Undulating with two short steep sections Grade: Moderate. Minimum age: 10 years (with adult supervision for under 16’s)
Local bike hire: Ghyllside Cycles, The Slack, Ambleside Tel 015394 33592 (bike hire only). Child’s bikes available. Located 250m from ride start point.
Suitable for: active families, leisure cyclists & mountain bikers on mountain bikes or hybrids
Nearby car parks: Miller Bridge (postcode LA22 0EE). Small car park at Ambleside Primary School at the ride start (weekends & school holidays only), Vicarage Lane LA22 9DH
What to bring
- A mountain or hybrid bike in safe, working order
- Warm and waterproof items of clothing, gloves and flat shoes (trainers or cycling shoes)
- A bite to eat and drink
- Sun screen in spring and summer months
- Small ruck sack or panniers to carry your equipment
- Helmets are required for under 16’s and recommended for adults
