Explore the Grasmere Trail - 3 August

Discover this new trail from Ambleside via Rydal Water to Grasmere with trained leaders. Just right for active families and leisure cyclists who wish to explore by bike. We follow a little known quiet route out of Ambleside and head for the shores of Rydal and Grasmere. Our effort is rewarded in Grasmere with lots of cafes for refreshment – or perhaps a piece of Grasmere gingerbread. For the return, we retrace the route –  the views look very different this way.

Starts from: Outside Ambleside Primary School, Vicarage Road, Ambleside LA22 9DH departing at 11.00am

Price: Adult £5, children free. Advanced booking essential.

Length: 20 km, 12 miles

Duration: 3 hours

Route characteristics: minor roads & improved bridleways. Undulating with two short steep sections Grade: Moderate. Minimum age: 10 years (with adult supervision for under 16’s)

Local bike hire: Ghyllside Cycles, The Slack, Ambleside Tel 015394 33592 (bike hire only). Child’s bikes available. Located 250m from ride start point.

Suitable for: active families, leisure cyclists & mountain bikers on mountain bikes or hybrids 

Nearby car parks: Miller Bridge (postcode LA22 0EE). Small car park at Ambleside Primary School at the ride start (weekends & school holidays only), Vicarage Lane LA22 9DH

 

What to bring

  • A mountain or hybrid bike in safe, working order
  • Warm and waterproof items of clothing, gloves and flat shoes (trainers or cycling shoes)
  • A bite to eat and drink
  • Sun screen in spring and summer months
  • Small ruck sack or panniers to carry your equipment 
  • Helmets are required for under 16’s and recommended for adults
